The joy of greenCOFFEE WITH WARREN, with Warren Harbeck |
The Cochrane area is alive with the joy of green. Clockwise from upper left: Glenpatrick Rd. near Glenbow Elementary School; Horse Creek Rd. after a rain; River Heights from Hwy 22; GlenEagles from Hwy 1A turnoff. One of my favourite psalms says it perfectly: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures….” And what a glorious green pasture our part of the Bow Valley has been for the past few weeks! Your enthusiastic responses to last week’s column set among the green trees of Cochrane’s Riverfront Park made me even more conscious of this year’s verdant world in which we live. For example, I took a second look at the variety of overlapping greens among the trees and shrubs on neighbours’ lawns not far from my home in Glenbow. The forest greens, olive greens, emerald greens, blue greens and yellow greens framed a burgundy bush as only an artist could imagine. In fact, it’s become almost an obsession with me. Everywhere I’ve gone the past few days, glorious greens have called to me, “Take my picture!” And what could I do but oblige, whether it was along Horse Creek Rd. after last Friday’s downpour, or heading into town along Hwy 22 by River Heights, or pausing above the Links of GlenEagles? Ah, the joy of green! As my wildlife photographer friend Mark Bretherton reminds me, “Green is life.” Yes, it’s rightly become a symbol of hope and new beginnings. And envy, too. Folks outside our rain-blessed region are green with envy over our good fortune.
