Midsummer foothills meanderings embrace a wonderful world

A leisurely drive along Township Rd 252 through the foothills southwest of Cochrane leads to vistas of our western ranching heritage, while travelling west along Highway 580 between Carstairs and Cremona is rewarded with fields of golden canola, views embraced also by well-travelled Great Blue Heron. Our midsummer mascot, Great Blue, has inspired yet another column.

Cochrane artist Suzanne Lorinczi, who had honoured the Great Blue Heron in one of her own works (see my column for Dec. 29, 2016), responded to my Aug. 1 column: “Love the way you keep featuring this beautiful creature, which hopefully will inspire others to appreciate nature's offerings.”

Great idea! I set out through Cochrane’s awesome foothills environment to see more of nature’s offerings.

When I next saw Great Blue, I mentioned my delight over our breathtaking surroundings, and enquired of him what views he especially likes when making his rural rounds. In the Satchmoesque spirit of this column’s theme song, he sang his response:

I see fields of green,
Canola, too,
Rolls of golden hay,
And horses true,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful world!

Oh yeah!
