Meet Editor TimCOFFEE WITH WARREN, with Warren Harbeck |
Within the first few sips, it became apparent to me that here was a career journalist who personifies the eagle’s-eye perspective for which this newspaper is named (see last week’s column). The other day I was enjoying my first cafĂ© chat with our newest coffee companion, Tim Kalinowski, just promoted to editor of The Cochrane Eagle, host newspaper for these columns. (He is also the new editor of its sister publications, Airdrie City View and Rocky View Weekly). "Over the past 14 years, I have covered a lot of different kinds of stories, both happy and tragic,” globetrotting Tim told me. “I know there are many great stories to tell here in Cochrane, and it is exciting to be a part of a growing and vital community like this one which still stays deeply tied to its roots." Yes, Tim does bring all kinds of experiences and stories to our table. Of particular relevance to our local situation is his well-informed background in environmental issues. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University. He is well aware of the impending crisis locally in accessing sources for town water supply. And then there’s his background in the sociological significance of life-defining values, such as those shared among world religions. Some years ago, he taught Religious Studies at the University of Regina. His respect for the importance of such values proved especially important during his stint in Japan, but also in his intercultural relations right here in Canada. And did I mention he’s a creative novelist, as well? His book, The Butcher’s War, bears witness to that in its account of the American Civil War tensions in the mid-1800s. One intriguing life experience Tim and I shared from back in our youth was our fascination with National Geographic Magazine. “I have a strong interest in geography and landscape geology, and often read articles on the subject,” he told me. “My dream job when I was younger was to work at National Geographic Magazine.” But now his dream job is right here at The Cochrane Eagle. "I am really excited to be in Cochrane as the new editor of The Eagle,” our perspective-savvy coffee companion said. “I look forward to meeting more and more members of the community as I embark on this latest journey in my journalism career. I love the community support The Eagle has in the town, and the enthusiasm people have for it." Welcome to our table, Tim. We raise our cups in a toast to you: To the joy of your journey with us, as you do your part in affirming a sense of community among all Cochrane-area folks!
